1. Material selection
Choose corrosion-resistant materials
Give priority to stainless steel rivets, such as 304 and 316 stainless steel. 304 stainless steel contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, which makes it have good corrosion resistance in general corrosive environments. Molybdenum is also added to 316 stainless steel, which makes it more corrosion-resistant in chloride-containing environments (such as seaside environments). In application scenarios where it may be exposed to corrosive environments such as chemicals, high humidity air or seawater, the use of such stainless steel rivets can fundamentally enhance corrosion resistance.
For some situations where the strength requirements are high but the environmental corrosion is relatively weak, carbon steel or aluminum alloy rivets with appropriate surface treatment can also be selected. For example, the carbon steel rivet is galvanized, and the zinc layer can be used as a sacrificial anode, which is first corroded in a corrosive environment, thereby protecting the internal rivet body. Aluminum alloy rivets themselves have a certain degree of corrosion resistance, and their corrosion resistance can be further improved through surface treatments such as anodizing.
2. Surface treatment
Painting or coating protection
For Domed Head Blind Rivet made of ordinary metal, it can be protected by painting. Choose a suitable anti-corrosion paint, such as epoxy paint, which has good adhesion and chemical resistance. A uniform paint layer is formed on the surface of the rivet to isolate the rivet from the external corrosive medium. The coating thickness is generally recommended to be within a certain range. Too thin may not provide sufficient protection, and too thick may affect the dimensional accuracy and installation performance of the rivet.
Other protective coatings, such as ceramic coatings, can also be used. Ceramic coatings have excellent high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. For rivets in high temperature or strong corrosive environments, the application of ceramic coatings can effectively extend their service life.
Passivation treatment
For stainless steel rivets, although they have certain corrosion resistance, passivation treatment can further improve their corrosion resistance. Passivation treatment is to form a dense oxide film on the surface of stainless steel by chemical methods. This oxide film can prevent oxygen and other corrosive media from contacting the metal inside the rivet, thereby playing a protective role.
3. Protection during installation and use
Avoid scratches and damage
During the installation process, use appropriate tools to avoid scratching the surface of the rivet. Because scratches will damage the protective layer or protective film on the surface of the rivet, exposing the internal metal to the corrosive environment and becoming the starting point of corrosion. For example, improper use of sharp tools may scrape off the paint layer or passivation film on the surface of the rivet.
Control the humidity of the working environment and contact with chemicals
If possible, try to reduce the humidity of the rivet working environment. The moisture in the air can be reduced by installing ventilation equipment or dehumidification equipment. At the same time, avoid direct contact of rivets with corrosive chemicals, such as acids and alkalis. In areas where there is a risk of chemical leakage, additional protective measures can be taken for rivets, such as wrapping protective materials.
Regular inspection and maintenance
Regularly inspect the equipment or structure using Domed Head Blind Rivet. Check whether there are signs of corrosion on the surface of the rivet, such as rust, discoloration, etc. If slight corrosion is found, the corrosion products can be cleaned in time and appropriate protective measures can be taken, such as repainting or replacing damaged rivets. For rivets that are in harsh environments for a long time, the frequency of inspection should be strengthened to ensure the reliability and safety of their connection.
